Which knee brace is right for you? That is a good question. There are a number of good manufacturers of quality knee braces. But you can get "lost in the forest" of trying to decide which brace is best for you.
The first thing one must realize is that there are a number of categories of knee braces. There are braces for ligament deficiency problems, braces for osteoarthritic (OA) problems, post operative rehabilitation, patella femoral tracking problems, and general knee problems. Within each of these categories there are a variety of braces to choose from. But the first step is to distinguish what category your specific condition fits.
A knee brace for OA problems is not going to do the job meant for a ligament deficient knee problem. And a knee brace in the general category being used for a ligament deficiency may feel like it is offering you some support initially, but in reality, when abnormal forces are applied to your knee from a sporting activity, it may be providing little to no protection for a strained or torn ligament in the knee.
The best way to determine what type of brace you need is to talk to your doctor or a physical therapist if they are well versed in sports medicine. They may not know which brace is the best one for you if they are not familiar with the options or are not involved in sports medicine. However, they can help you understand what is the mechanism of injury. You must know this! Is your knee problem the result of a disease process? Or is it from trauma/injury or is there an anatomical deficiency? In the next few posts I am going to provide you with some basic information for each category of knee bracing which I'm sure you will find helpful in enabling you to make the right choice for yourself.
