Steve Hawking, Carl Sagan, Einstein, Neils Bohr, Newton; Enlightened?

Recently in a Think Tank Forum Online, one, which can get a little way out there sometimes, a gentleman added to the excitement when he asked the group to entertain a very abstract around the concept of enlightenment. Indeed there is a lot of talk these days about the subject but this gentleman preceded to really rock reality when he stated:

“Scientists like Steve Hawking, Carl Sagan, Einstein, Neils Bohr, Newton were not enlightened”

Interesting indeed. First off Steven Hawking is still alive so you could not claim he was not enlightened during his life, even if he were not today. Additional for the gentleman, I would like to comment on the rest; Well if you are suggesting that physicists and scientists like Steve Hawking, Carl Sagan, Einstein, Neils Bohr, Newton were not enlightened then well, what were they? They definitely sure beat that guy who flipped me off on the freeway the other day that’s for sure, as I wonder if that person had even the cognitive ability of a drunk Chimpanzee?

When you hear the term enlightened what does it mean to you? Do you consider yourself enlightened? Do you agree that the top scientists of today and past periods are not or were not enlightened? What do you think? Think on this in 2006.
